Papplewick Pumping Station - pump buckets
These are the lift pump buckets that would be at the end of the wooden pump rods in a rising main in a pump well. These allow the water to pass freely as the bucket descends but the flap valves close firmly on the up stroke to deliver a volume of water equivalent to the swept volume (minus any slip). Behind them are two foot valves that would be at the bottom of the rising main. At Papplewick the buckets would support a column of water about 200' high as there was only one lift. I heard a volunteer suggest there would be buckets every 7' but that would not be so. These are probably not Papplewick's buckets but there was no indication of their provenance.
