On the 5th September 1942 15 year old Joan Knights went into work on her day off so her sister could have a last few hours with her fiancee who was on leave.
Joan Kathleen Knights was killed when the shoe factory she was working at, Batson & Webster, received a direct hit.
Also killed was George Smith, the 43-year-old machine room foreman and special constable.
Fourteen other workers from the factory were injured.
A block of flats now stand on the site of the factory
