The population of the original parish of Heigham (“village by the water”) grew by over 13,000 in 60 years from 1801. Hence it became necessary to enlarge the church and to provide four additional churches during the latter part of the C19th century. Thus St. Barnabas Church was built, and finally consecrated in January 1906.
