Elm Hill, Norwich
With Wensum Street 200 metres behind the photographer, this is a view towards the rear of The Halls, a former medieval Blackfriars Church. The lintel-topped passageway through the yellow painted building is the entrance into what was previously Roaches Court (i.e. courtyard). Richard Roach, a merchant, lived here in 1830. The flanking properties, i.e. Nos. 34 & 36 were built as a substantial merchant's dwelling that extended to the river at their rear. The central courtyard of the complex was entered through the passageway seen here. However, only the entrance to the courtyard survives - i.e. there are no properties around the internal courtyard following demolitions in 1920 and 1937.
