St Mary the Virgin Church, Chalk on Christmas Day
St Mary the Virgin Church, Chalk on Christmas Day
Although Chalk is now just a continuation of Gravesend beyond Denton, the church of St Virgin is in open countryside just off the busy A226 with views down to the River Thames. A church building existed here for the Synod of Chalkhythe in 785 and was noted in the Domesday Book of 1086.

The current structure dates from the 12th century. The tower, a prominent landmark for navigation in the Thames and also clearly visible when travelling along the A226, dates from the 15th century.

This photograph was taken at fifteen minutes after midnight on Christmas Day after the midnight communion. To see the church in daylight go to Link
