Backbarrow Ironworks blowing engine
Backbarrow Ironworks blowing engine
Backbarrow has a derelict ironworks with a charcoal blast furnace that was blown by this horizontal single cylinder engine. It was installed second-hand in c1924 and has been claimed to be by Tangye of Birmingham but that is disputed. The slide valve steam cylinder is c18" x 36" with the blowing cylinder behind it. The flywheel is 12' 6". Following a long period of dereliction there has been development of the adjoining site and the buildings and furnace appear to have received some conservation work.

This was the first day of nearly a fortnight trip to Scotland following my graduation and most of that was spent sleeping in the back of a Vauxhall Astra estate.
