The maintenance work was possibly connected with the Werrington Grade Separation Plan, which involved the construction of a "dive under" - or underpass - linking the Stamford Lines and the Great Northern Great Eastern (GNGE) line at Werrington Junction just north of Peterborough.
The footbridge on Foxcovert Road (sometimes written as Fox Covert Road) on the outskirts of Werrington was opened in September 2014. The former level crossing at this site was closed to motor traffic in the mid-1980s.
