John Atkinson Memorial, Radcliffe Piazza
The memorial to local resident John Atkinson was unveiled in Radcliffe Piazza on 28 January 2020. Mr Atkinson was one of the 22 people who were killed in the Manchester Arena Bombing in May 2017. A support worker for children with additional needs, he was aged just 28 when he died.
The 1½ metre high memorial features Manchester’s iconic worker bee, an emblem which became a symbol of unity and defiance in the wake of the terrorist attack. The bee has been carved out of a piece of yellow/buff coloured granite, shaped like a rock, sits on top of a contrasting black polished granite tapering podium. The podium carries the inscription:
"In loving memory of John Atkinson"
16-11-1988 22-5-2017
A photograph of Mr Atkinson, and musical notes from his favourite song are also engraved on the monument.
