Norton Lindsey, Holy Trinity - mass dial
Norton Lindsey, Holy Trinity - mass dial
The mass dial (scratched into the stonework of the south-west buttress) was a form of sundial to indicate to parishioners the times of services, in the days before clocks. Note also the date 1873 on the rainwater hopper.
Church of the Holy Trinity, Norton Lindsey

The church is believed to occupy a Saxon, or possibly even pre-Christian, sacred site; certainly the font dates from Saxon times. Most of the walls date from 1208 though the building was re-roofed and enlarged with a north aisle and vestry in 1880 by E Christian [probably Ewan Christian, who also rebuilt nearby Claverdon church]. It is now listed grade II* (list entry 1186751).
