The wide expanse of Beaulieu Heath
The site of the WWII airfield on Hatchet Moor. RAF Beaulieu was built to heavy bomber standards and when opened in 1942 it became part of Coastal Command, flying Liberators. Later it was taken over by Fighter Command flying Typhoons but by 1944 it had become a USAAF base in support of the D-Day operations. Once the invasion of Europe was underway, the base was returned to the RAF and experimental work was undertaken here until after the war. It was finally closed in 1959 and the land returned to the Forestry Commission. There are few traces of the base remaining.
