Leeds City Varieties, Swan Street
Leeds City Varieties, Swan Street
The oldest theatre in Leeds, and hidden away down the narrow Swan Street between Briggate and Lands Lane. It was built on the site of an old coaching inn, The White Swan, and the bar below it on the left is called The Swan. It is a grade 2* listed building and the interior remains largely unaltered - see SE3033 : Leeds City Varieties
Outside is an advert for the pantomime, Cinderella. Less visible in the doorway is an advert for The Good Old Days, a re-creation of the Victorian Music Hall which was televised from here for many years from 1953, and still continues. It is traditional for the audience to attend in Victorian costume.
