National Museum of Scotland - Caprington Newcomen engine
This Newcomen type atmospheric engine dates from 1770/80 and was installed second-hand at Caprington Colliery near Kilmarnock in 1806. It was probably built by Carron Ironworks but the date and original owner are unknown. The wooden beam was replaced by the current cast-iron one in 1837. The cylinder is 30" bore with a 4' 6" to 5' stroke in a cylinder 8' long. It was re-erected in a replica engine house in the Museum's modern extension.

This view is through an opening in the rear wall of the house. This shows the top of the open topped cylinder with its bolted on bell mouth and the overflow pipe to catch excess water from the water seal on top of the piston. The piston rod is seen top centre and operates the cast-iron beam through parallel motion.
