Flowering magnolia
In a garden adjacent to the Rosary Cemetery. Magnolia is an ancient genus of trees which existed before bees came into being and the flowers for this reason encourage pollination by beetles. Fossilised specimens of magnolia are documented to date to 20 million years ago, and plants identifiably belonging to the Magnoliaceae date to 95 million years ago. Magnolias are native to east and southeast Asia and can also be found growing in eastern North America, Central America, the West Indies, and some species in South America.
