Rhubarb and Victoria No. 2 pit, Stanley
Rhubarb and Victoria No. 2 pit, Stanley
The trees cover the spoil heap of Victoria No 2 pit. Victoria Colliery had many pits, and this one closed around 1887. The field is full of rhubarb, which grows outdoors for two years before being overwintered in a heated shed to produce forced rhubarb. Cheap local coal reduced the costs of production.
