NT2340 : Plaque on Neidpath Viaduct

taken 4 years ago, near to Kings Muir, Scottish Borders, Scotland

Plaque on Neidpath Viaduct
Plaque on Neidpath Viaduct
A slate plaque on the north side of the viaduct, inscribed as follows:

Neidpath Railway Viaduct
Opened 1864 Closed 1954
Designed by Peebles resident
Mr Robert Murray
One of the finest skew arch
constructions in Scotland

Murray was the Resident Engineer for the project and worked out in detail the complex shapes of the masonry blocks for the eight skew arches. The constraints of the tunnel exit and the line's route on the opposite bank obliged the viaduct to cross the Tweed at an angle of about 35 degrees to the river. The viaduct is now listed as a class A historic structure. (Information from 'Bridging the Tweed' by Jim Lyon, author publication 2019).
