The East Lancashire Paper Mill in Radcliffe was established on 29th March 1860 and was one of the town’s major employers until it closed in 2001. The site of the works has been cleared and few traces remain. These gates and gate pillars which stood at the entrance to the paper mill have recently been restored relocated to the park at Festival Gardens from their old position on Rectory Lane/Church Street East (see SD7907 : East Lancashire Paper Mill Gates). The two stone gate pillars have been secured into the ground and the gates have been made into an attractive focal point as part a major renovation of Festival Gardens which has been carried out by Bury Council in collaboration with Radcliffe Heritage Society and Radcliffe Rotary Club.
