Building the new Pooley Bridge
Building the new Pooley Bridge
This steelwork will, eventually, carry the roadway across the River Eamont. The bridge was originally scheduled to be open for Easter (i.e. at least a week ago), but the date has already been put back to June and I shall not be surprised to see it delayed even further. Local businesses were very unhappy about the delay, but now in the middle of the Covid-19 lockdown the bridge is probably the least of their worries.

The arch with yellow railings has been added since previous photos were taken. I wondered whether the intention was to separate pedestrians from the traffic, but I am grateful to Ian Taylor for pointing out that there will be a concrete pour after the bridge is in position, and this walkway is for the construction workers who will be undertaking this operation. (If you look carefully you can see that there is a yellow arch on both sides of the steelwork, which would clearly not be needed just for pedestrians.)
