ST3056 : Probably the wrong height

taken 5 years ago, near to Brean, Somerset, England

Probably the wrong height
Probably the wrong height
This is supposedly the height above sea level of the bird hide overlooking the Axe estuary, but the nearest spot heights on the OS map are 5 and 7 metres. I suspect this is an under-estimate.

The ragged arrangement of boards allows people to walk along the coastal path without disturbing the birds, but also to use it as a hide to allow the walkers to become bird watchers for a while
Brean Down Way

This is a cycle path and footpath around the base of Brean Down, providing an 8 mile route from Weston Super Mare to the fort on Brean Down.

It crosses the local marshes and uses the Brean Cross Sluice as a bridge across the River Axe. A shelter half way along forms part of the Great Brean Bird Wall, a random-planked fence that allows the birds on the tidal river to be observed without disturbance, and coincides with the river crossing at the sluice.

There is a web site for the path: LinkExternal link

The route is part of national cycle route 33, which nominally links Axminster to Clevedon. The original route of 33 had to make a lengthy diversion over the Bleadon Levels, but with the opening of the bridge over the sluice the route has been simplified.

Route 33 continues from Brean cafe down to Berrow and to Burnham-on-sea.

King Charles III England Coast Path (ECP)

The King Charles III England Coast Path (ECP) will take advantage of new public rights of access to the coast, to form a 2,800 mile long public path right around England's coasts.

Parts of the path were already open in 2016, and it was intended at that time that the whole path would be completed by 2020. At that time, the path was called the England Coast Path. It was renamed King Charles III England Coast Path in 2023, in honour of the King's coronation.

More information about the ECP is on the National Trails website: LinkExternal link
