SE1570 : Gateway on Dauber Gill Head

Gateway on Dauber Gill Head
Gateway on Dauber Gill Head
I thought it was strange to have a gateway so high up the moor, but when I looked on the 1854 1st Edition OS Map, this wall marks the Boundary of the Liberty and the gateway was for a "road" that came up from Skelding and headed towards Covil Grange & Bouthwaite, so it's most likely to be Medieval in origin.
On this side of the wall, the moorland is known as Pensylvania, on the far side it is Sigsworth Moor.
