The Old Road
The Old Road
First established in the 12thC as a route for monks of Byland Abbey to access their land holdings in the upper part of Nidderdale, over land owned by Fountains Abbey, later this became a major post-Medieval route for taking lead, wool and produce to the markets at Kirkby Malzeard and Ripon. For whatever reason, possibly its steepness on the Nidderdale side, it was not adopted as a metalled road in the 30s-60s, when others were, however it is a County Road, and as such in theory can still be driven over. (I have done it twice, both times in a 4x4, over 7 years ago)
