This home-made rainbow banner on High Street in Glinton was typical of many which were erected to express appreciation for key workers - such as doctors, nurses and other National Health Service (NHS) employees, carers, teachers, refuse (garbage) collectors, farmers and those involved in food production and distribution, supermarket employees, delivery drivers, postal workers, members of the emergency services and armed forces - and other essential staff who were continuing to work during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020.
When this photo was taken, the United Kingdom was still under a state of lockdown announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson on March 23rd., 2020. This meant that citizens were only permitted to leave their homes for the purposes of food shopping, for medical reasons or to provide care for a vulnerable person, for work (in the case of those unable to work from home) or for one session of exercise per day - such as walking, running or cycling - in order to limit the spread of coronavirus, or Covid-19.
During the lockdown, citizens were instructed to observe social distancing - i.e., maintaining a distance of at least two metres from anyone outside their own household - and all large public gatherings and sporting events were suspended. In addition, all shops selling non-essential goods and services (basically all non-food stores apart from pharmacies) as well as pubs, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, theatres, gymnasia and other leisure and entertainment facilities were ordered to close.
Schools were also closed to most pupils except for the children of key workers; schools and universities were continuing to make coursework available online. Examinations which had been scheduled for the end of the academic year were cancelled and teachers were instead asked to award estimated grades.
The British government announced on April 16th., 2020, that the lockdown would be extended by at least another three weeks.
