The large building has been refurbished in recent times to modernise the building and alter parts of the building for new and alternative uses. The floor area under the wing of the building pictured here used to be open allowing access into the internal courtyard. As part of the refurbishment the area has been transformed into an internal part of the building with a new glazed frontage to both sides. The space is now used as the main reception area for the parts of the building occupied by the city council. NZ2464 : Newcastle Civic Centre shows the building prior to it being altered.
