Burhill Mining Ground
Burhill Mining Ground
Large amounts of spoil and circular dips in the ground are the most obvious feature of the Burhill Mines.
The veins are mostly concentrated in a narrow belt, some 5000ft long, running over Burhill & Greengrooves. The mines were probably begun in the Monastic period, and a half penny found in a rake (a surface working) was dated to 1625. Whether or not working continued through the 17thC is not known but there were certainly mines being worked here in the 18th & 19thC. The last lead mine closed in 1882.
During the 1920s some of the dumps were reworked for fluorspar, a mineral not wanted by the old lead miners, and eventually a few of the old veins were reopened to extract it, these sites are lower down Burhill, but are connected with the veins, and were worked into the late 1960s.
