New landing stage
New landing stage
A recently built new landing stage suitable for a rowing boat at the side of Tannoch Loch. This and the newly laid turf beside it have presumably been a local resident's Coronavirus lockdown project.
Tannoch Loch

Tannoch Loch is a small suburban loch within a Conservation Area in Milngavie. It is almost surrounded by fairly large and expensive houses, many dating from the early 1900s. Many of the houses have gardens with private jetties which directly adjoin the loch.

The loch was created in 1895 by John Woodburn as part of a small hydro-electric scheme by building a dam across the Tannoch Burn at the point where Tannoch Drive now runs.

A former Provost of Milngavie, Woodburn was a builder who was very active in encouraging the expansion of the town at the turn of the 19th/20th Century.

The loch was purchased by the adjoining residents in 1922 for the sum of 100.

Many species of birds can be seen there, including regular vaistors such as Mallard, Tufted duck, Goldeneye, Goosander, Cormorant, Grey Heron, Moorhen, Black Headed Gull, Common Gull and Lesser Black-backed Gull.

Others seen at least once include Dipper, Grey wagtail, Kingfisher, Common Sandpiper, Reed Bunting, Whooper swan, Greylag Goose, Red-breasted Merganser, Fulvous Whistling Duck, Mandarin Duck (albino), Smew, Great Crested Grebe, Little grebe, Pochard, Coot and Herring gull.
