taken 5 years ago, near to Alston, Cumbria, England

Retaining wall with inset milestone
Retaining wall with inset milestone
The milestone is close to the junction of the A686 and A689 in Alston. It's in a wall retaining ground below the town hall and the monument at the centre of the image which is to the memory of Jacob Walton who died on the second of March 1863 aged 53. The column was reinstated in 2004 after being removed 44 years before to allow for road improvements. That event is recorded in the Cumberland and Westmorland Herald - LinkExternal link.
