Cyclist at Cinderford
Taken looking into what was once Bilson yard, an extensive network of sidings, from the start of the Great Western's Churchway Branch to Northern United colliery. Out of shot to either side of me are the remains of the embankment which once carried the Severn & Wye Railway's Cinderford extension, built in 1900 when demand for a station closer to Cinderford town centre became too great for the company to ignore. Previously, Cinderford Station had been a few miles out of town in the middle of nowhere: the cost of bridging two Great Western branch lines led to the S&W dragging their heels in providing a more convenient alternative! The line at this point closed in 1965 with the Christmas Eve closure of Northern United, the last remaining deep colliery in the Forest of Dean and the last industry served by the branch, and is now a footpath and cycle track.
