The Great Skua or Bonxie (Stercorarius skua)
The Great Skua or Bonxie (Stercorarius skua)
This is the largest, most boisterous, and brutal predatory skua. It is a merciless killer and I have witnessed a Great Skua kill a fully grown Mallard and several Puffin on St Kilda. The Great Skua is a fearless bird and will attack anyone encroaching the nesting area. Note the hooked, dark, stout bill and the pitiless eyes. In Shetland this bird is referred to as the Bonxie.
