Between the lake proper and the perimeter path is this area of marshland with willow trees.
Stanley Marsh nature reserve

A small reserve about 10 hectares in area on the outskirts of Wakefield, partly occupying the site of the former Deep Drop Colliery (closed in 1879 after a disastrous explosion killed 21 men and boys) and centred on a lake of about 1.5 hectares. Most of the rest of the site is wooded apart from a strip of meadow on the east side.

A fuller history of the site can be found on a local website LinkExternal link
