Nottingham Arkwright Street Station
In the 1960s British Railways proposed a large number of passenger railway closures. The final decision was taken by the government which had to take various factors into account including, importantly, the degree of 'hardship' the closure would cause. Quite often the minister would decide that most of the closure could proceed but certain stations or sections of line must remain open until, for example, improvements could be made to local roads or bus services. The expectation was that these oddities would have only a short stay of execution although some examples never did close and remain a part of the network to this day. One of the strangest was the requirement in 1966 for a service to be maintained between Nottingham and Rugby when the rest of the Great Central main line was closed. At the time the railways were very keen to release Nottingham's Victoria station for development so Arkwright Street station, about a mile to the south, was reopened as the northern terminus for the service in September 1967. The reprieve was very short, lasting only until May 1969, but it is seen here in 1968 with an empty diesel multiple unit heading towards Weekday Cross Junction having completed its day's service. Only the up platform (the one on the right) was in use at this time. Since this photograph was taken, the station and the arches it stood on have been demolished and no trace remains today. The tower of St Mary's church can be seen above the train. See also SK5738 : Train waiting at Nottingham (Arkwright Street) Station
