Weymouth Quay Station
Weymouth Quay Station
A boat train awaits departure from the station at Weymouth Quay for London having met the Channel Islands ferry in the summer of 1984. The arrangements on the Quay branch at the time were unique on the British Rail network, requiring trains to pass through the town streets in order to reach the main line at Weymouth Junction. Use of the station was eventually to fall out of favour as fewer ferry passengers arrived and departed by train; the branch was expensive to operate because of the need to deploy staff to ensure that the route was clear and it was seen as cheaper and easier to provide a bus connection with the main Weymouth station. Nevertheless, the last use of the line was not until 1999.
