SO6606 : Old railway viaduct, Blakeney

Old railway viaduct, Blakeney
Old railway viaduct, Blakeney
The viaduct carried the track of the unsuccessful Forest of Dean Central Railway until 1940. The railway was never a success, being built in the teeth of competition from the Severn & Wye Railway which had built its line first and nicked most of the traffic the FoDCR was built to capture. The arches pictured here were part of a viaduct which carried the line over Clark's Lane, New Road and Blackpool Brook: traffic over the viaduct ceased abruptly with the closure of Howbeach Colliery in 1921, and the track over the viaduct was lifted, probably to aid the war effort, in 1940.
