The line to Cardiff
The line to Cardiff
The South Wales Railway, constructed to Brunel's broad gauge, opened in stages from 1850 and linked the GWR's system at Gloucester to Chepstow and Cwrdiff, ultimately terminating at Fishguard. The construction of the line was carried out amid the usual politicking and arguing about routes and gauges; there's a detailed history at LinkExternal link. The GWR had sponsored the line from its conception in 1845, and took it over altogether in 1863; the broad gauge lasted only until 1873. Most of the route remains in use to this day. Awre for Blakeney Station (sometimes known as Awre Junction) was in the centre right of this shot until closure in 1959.
