The line to Gloucester
Formerly the site of Awre Junction: until around 1959, the Forest of Dean Central Railway diverged from the South Wales Railway's main Gloucester - Fishguard line in the middle of this photo. The FoDCR was closed in 1949, but a short stub remained in use as a wagon storage siding until the track was finally lifted in 1959. The SWR opened here as a broad gauge line in 1851, was taken over entirely by the Great Western Railway in 1863 and converted to standard gauge in 1873: much of the route remains in use today. On the left is another view of the 1909-built Awre Junction signal box, derelict since its duties were taken over by Lydney signal box (itself demolished in 2012) in the 1970s.
