Brading Station
In the 1960s British Railways proposed the closure of the remaining lines on the Isle of Wight. However, the government declined closure for the 8 mile stretch between Ryde and Shanklin; this was the busiest part of the network especially for holiday traffic in summer. It was therefore decided to replace the existing steam trains with an electric service and a fleet of former London Underground trains, built in the 1920s, was obtained in 1967 for the purpose. In this view one such unit is leaving Brading for Shanklin. They were replaced in 1990 by a fleet of slightly newer Underground trains. The passing loop was removed from here in 1988 and only one platform is now in use. At the time of this photograph the station was still lit by gas.
Island Line

There used to be a small network of railways on the Isle of Wight. Most were closed in the 1950s and 1960s leaving just one survivor, the line from Ryde Pier Head to Shanklin. This line was electrified using the third-rail system, but work was carried out in a tunnel at Ryde to prevent flooding. This resulted in the tunnel being too small for full-height trains. Since then, the railway on the Isle of Wight has been operated by old London Underground "tube" trains.
