Dodging the ferry, South Shields
The ferry between North and South Shields operates to a timetable and whilst I'm sure they adhere to the rules for the avoidance of collisions at sea, they will make plenty of wake and turbulence as they come and go, so the prudent sea kayaker looks for a way to avoid close encounters. Fortunately, as both terminals are floating pontoon docks, there's a skulkers' route under the bridge. The water is already getting a little choppier than on our rather relaxing journey with the ebb tide from Derwenthaugh through the city of Newcastle, as the tide is now opposed by a brisk sea breeze. The last kilometre or so out of the River Tyne entrance will prove to be more challenging than the whole trip so far, though still well within our comfort zone.
