Birmingham New Street Station
The 'Western' class of diesel hydraulic locomotives was widely considered to be one of British Rail's best designs, at least visually, but their non-standard nature meant they had short lives. This one, D1007 'Western Talisman', was to be involved in a fatal accident a few months after this photograph was taken and subsequently withdrawn from service. Here, however, she is about to depart Birmingham New Street for Paddington. New Street is nowadays reviled as a 'sixties architectural disaster but in 1973 it still seemed very new and modern. Although by then train spotting had lost some of its appeal with the demise of steam engines, groups of young lads spending their day on the ends of the platforms was still a common sight.
