Inside Haie Hill tunnel
Inside Haie Hill tunnel
A not-very-good photo of the interior of Haie Hill tunnel. The far end, just over 1000 yards away, is visible. The tunnel is on a rising gradient of 1 in 56, heading west: it could take a train of empties up to five minutes to pass through. Five minutes on the footplate of a hard-working steam loco in the confines of an unventilated tunnel can't have been much fun.
I took this standing precariously atop a rather rickety pile of logs which someone had piled up at the base of the brick wall which prevents access to the tunnel (see SO6709 : Eastern portal, Haie Hill tunnel): climbing up was tricky enough, but taking a photo on a long exposure was even more difficult, so cut me some slack regarding the quality of the shot!
