The Maiden Way near Hard Rigg Edge
The Maiden Way was a roughly 20-mile (32 km) Roman road connecting the Roman fort of Bravoniacum (Kirkby Thore) near Penrith with that of NY6665 : Carvoran (Magna) Roman Fort on Hadrian's Wall, via the intermediate fort of NY6948 : Whitley Castle (Epiacum) roughly half-way between the two. For further info, see the Wiki entry LinkExternal link .

The course of the Maiden Way can be seen above the first horizon (half left) leading into a long, narrow plantation - see the map and satellite image LinkExternal link . Beyond the plantation, there is little or no trace of the road on either the ground or on satellite images, except for a short section north of Park Fell in NY6946 LinkExternal link .

North of Epiacum, the road becomes visible again north of Burnstones in NY6754 LinkExternal link , and can be followed all the way to where it crossed the A689 in NY6658 LinkExternal link . North of the junction, the Way is now a minor road for about 3 km, followed by another 3 km or so with again little or no trace on the ground or on satellite images LinkExternal link .
