NZ4921 : Middlesbrough 2nd railway station (site), Yorkshire

taken 7 years ago, near to Middlesbrough, England

Middlesbrough 2nd railway station (site), Yorkshire
Middlesbrough 2nd railway station (site), Yorkshire
Opened in 1837 by the Stockton & Darlington Railway, this terminus of the line from Darlington replaced an earlier one nearby at Watson's Wharf (see NZ4921 : Middlesbrough 1st railway station (site), Yorkshire). In turn, this station closed in 1846 when it was replaced by a third station near where the current railway station is.
View north west (the line immediately curved sharply south) towards Thornaby and Darlington. The building nearest the camera carries a plaque to say it is the site of Middlesbrough's 'first' station. Old maps point towards the main structure having been somewhere between where the second and third buildings from the camera now are, with the track having been to the right of it.
