At the Guil Tree
Shown on the old 6-inch maps, the Guil Tree is described in the OS name book of 1857 as a large plane at the roadside next to Guiltreehill Farm. According to tradition, a tree on this site gave refuge to William Wallace during his guerrilla campaign against the English. Although the existing plane tree is very old, it’s hardly likely to be the same one from the 13th century story. The Gaelic word 'guil' indicates weeping or sorrow.
