Old Guidestoop at Burnt Edge
Old Guidestoop at Burnt Edge
All four sides of this stone are carved with the name of a place, although only two are still discernable, they are Ripley & Rippon, although this front face could be Masham with a distance of 7 miles, which is pretty accurate. I feel that further investigation maybe in order, along with some light trimming, and some gentle digging to reveal more of the stone. Guidestoops date from the late Medieval to the reign of King George, after which they are mostly replaced with milestones.
