Heading east from Smardale bridge
Smardale bridge is crossed by a bridleway which continues towards Kirkby Stephen to the northeast (though reaches the road system well before that). Visitors to the Smardalegill nature reserve, who are nominally not allowed to use the railway trackbed owing to the closure of the Smardalegill viaduct "until further notice" can get to its northern end by taking a permissive path via a stile on the left just beyond the first steep bit of the bridleway hidden by the bank.
