Surrounding a 30m square court are walls up to 2.4m thick containing a five storey tower in the NE angle. At one time thought to have been built by the Le Poers in the 13th century, it is now considered to have been built by James, Earl of Ormond after he obtained Granagh in 1375 (or his successor). The Cromwellian commander Colonel Axtell captured it in 1650.
