Public Bridleway Near New Hartley
Public Bridleway Near New Hartley
This public bridleway leads initially to Seaton Red House Farm from a sharp bend in the road to New Hartley. When the first Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area was published in 1865 the farm was in situ, whilst less than 400 metres to the west stood Hester Pit where, on the 16 January 1862, 204 men were killed in a mining accident. The disaster prompted a change in the law that required in future that all collieries were to have at least two independent means of escape.
