The two blowing engine houses and chimney are some of the few original features on the open air museum site. Out of sight to the right is the reconstructed wrought iron works. The period Ford truck adds a nice touch and the absence of other people also adds to the period feel.
SJ6903 : Blists Hill To call it a "dummy pithead" is perhaps a little unfair. The shaft is that of a genuine 600' deep mine that has been excavated to about 50'. The pithead gear and steam winding engine are genuine items that have been relocated and re-erected as faithfully as possible. Although the ensemble is not original to the site it is all composed of authentic items on an authentic mine and "dummy" doesn't do it justice.
