Although there is a wide (locked) gate, the tracks either side have deteriorated to little more than indistinct footpaths over the summit of the route at 680m, which was also pretty much cloudbase as the weather deteriorated. The mudstones and limestones we'd met earlier in Burnhope Burn are now replaced by a sandstone which weathers out grey - the Firestone Sill, in the Upper Limestone Group of the Upper Carboniferous.
