Detail of Birnbeck Pier: Typical trestle and girders
The cast iron columns were originally braced with spider braces (located below this view), which still exist. The lattice bracing between columns and diagonal bracing between columns and girders were added in 1912, but have since mostly disappeared through neglect on most of the trestles. This particular trestle is one of the first from the shoreward abutments, and appears to be in the best condition.
