Anthills in pasture
Anthills in pasture
View west of the lane near Lockeridge Farm, Lower Hook.
They're ant hills of the yellow meadow ant (lasius flavus), which are quite common around here - and explains why the green woodpecker is so common here too. The ants like the high ground because the ant hills are temperature-controlled nurseries and need to be dry to allow air flow over the larvae.
