Generation of Possibilities
Generation of Possibilities
This sculpture of a large magnet is one of a series of science-inspired sculptures near to the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology UMIST (now part of the University of Manchester). The sculpture, by Paul Frank Lewthwaite, is titled “The Generation of Possibilities”. It is spray-painted steel on a concrete-filled base. According to the artist's website LinkExternal link , The Generation of Possibilities was “inspired by the electromagnetic experiments of William Sturgeon (1783-1850) which led to the development of the generator and motor. The forms also mirror the arches of the railway viaduct adjacent to the site.“ It is situated on Altrincham Street outside the university’s Barnes-Wallis Building.
