A Structure Gauging Train. The locomotive in charge is Class 31454. The running numbers were - DB 975001/DC 460000/DB 975280 + 31454. The central vehicle in the train has an optical device for checking the rails.

The first Class 31 locomotives started out in life as Class 30 with Mirrlees engines. A further 226 were built, with uprated engines, but after five years all the locomotives had them replaced with English Electric. All were built between 1957 and 1962.

In the foreground is a catch point, which are use to derail and stop runaway trains. At the side of it is a point motor and a ground signal. The small strange looking board with red and white chevrons, sticking out from beyond the train has, 'Do not move' written on it.
